Treasures of Medieval Churches and Monasteries

As in the rest of medieval Europe, the monasteries of Bavaria were centres of learning and science. They preserved not only the works of Antique authors but also medieval literature as well as popular texts, such as the oldest written documents in German: The Wessobrunn Prayer from the early 9th century, and the songs of the Carmina Burana. Workshops in the monasteries produced the beautiful illuminated manuscripts and magnificent bindings. Books like these, commissioned by noble patrons, bishops and abbots, are kept in treasuries at the Residence in Munich, the Bavarian State Library, and numerous other museums, libraries and church treasuries.
