Many see the traditional Bavarian pub culture crumbling. And rightly so: since the end of the 1960s, the number of traditional pubs in Bavaria has been dwindling and village communities are losing their focal point. Recently, this has worsened dramatically - long before coronavirus. The keywords here are bureaucracy, staff shortages and changes in leisure behavior. The pandemic also caused hardship for established landlords and landladies.
The Bavarian exhibition explores the development from the Roman tavern to the cozy inn to the pompous "beer palace". Around 1900, Bavarian breweries made the tavern culture internationally famous at world exhibitions. None of this would have been possible without hard-working landlords, diligent waitresses and peculiar regulars! But we also take a look at the hard everyday life of the waitresses, the poverty of the small traders, brawls, political violence and the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption.
With many powerful original exhibits, hands-on stations and media, the exhibition tells the story of the various forms of hospitality. Hearty fare, accompanied by beer or Franconian wine, heated political discussions at the regulars' table, theater performances, communal tavern singing or bowling competitions attracted guests to the inn.
Of course, it is also about recipes for how traditional inns can remain fit for the future. Will the innkeepers' creative ideas show the way out of the crisis? That is also up to you as a guest!
