A ruler with sword and sceptre, a saint who tames a bear - not Hollywood fiction, but Bavarian history! The Bavarian State Exhibition 2024 takes you back to the early Middle Ages, to Tassilo, Korbinian and the bear. The history of the diocese of Freising began with the arrival of the missionary bishop Korbinian in 724. On the 1300th anniversary of the diocese, we take a look at the beginnings of the church in Bavaria and the legacy of the Agilolfing dukes, who ruled over an empire extending as far as South Tyrol, Upper Austria, Carinthia and Slovenia. Let yourself be captivated by Duke Tassilo III, who competed with Charlemagne.

It is a story of crisis and reconstruction: It begins with the tragedy of the Thirty Years' War. Bavaria is one of the big players, fights for Bohemia on behalf of the Habsburg Emperor and wins the title of Elector. The imperial court rages in the Old Town Square in Prague. Bohemia must become Catholic again. Bavaria is a war zone for decades and is one of the losers in the end. After the catastrophe, the focus is on reconstruction. It finds its form in the Baroque - in Bohemia as well as in Bavaria.
In the virtual exhibition, you will find everything you need to know about the Bavarian Constitution of 1946 and the history of democracy in Bavaria: informative videos, illustrative infographics and interactive question games await you. You also have the opportunity to take part in a historical vote in the state parliament.
