The signs of the times

After the end of the World War, the revolution, and the assassination of Kurt Eisner, no one in Munich really knows how to proceed in 1919. Everyone is waiting. Times are changing and upheaval is in the air. Democracy is in its infancy, and political radicalization on the left and right is causing great uncertainty. Who is a friend and who is an enemy? Inflation, poverty, and disease are fueling the tense atmosphere, and the pace is picking up. Bavaria becomes a hotspot during this period. Technical innovations, records, discoveries, and the spirit of the wild 1920s with new music and new fashion are everywhere. People celebrate extravagantly. But with the economic crisis of 1929 comes a new slump—creating fertile ground for the rise of the NSDAP.

A "virtual production"

The production company jangled nerves broke new ground for the film: for the first time, the actors performed in front of a large LED wall. Depending on the camera location, the changing background images of the LEDs adapt perfectly to the perspective of the respective scene. This means that the shots, including the special effects, are already completely in the can during filming – a virtual "showcase into the past" and a conscious part of the production.
