Round Tour > Farewells 1/1
Farewells
Leaving Germany usually meant leaving it for ever. Visits across the Atlantic - during the 19th century, at least - were too expensive and arduous for most people.

Farewell ceremonies provided the last chance for people to be together. The farewell songs that were sung at such events often expressed disappointment and anger at the social and political conditions that necessitated emigration, but also a clear hope of a better life in America. "Jetzt ist die Zeit und Stunde da, wir fahren ins Amerika" was one of the most popular farewell songs.
