Ludwig I and Regensburg

The cathedral in Regensburg, the Walhalla near Donaustauf and the Liberation Hall near Kelheim: without question, they are among the most important building projects of King Ludwig I. In the background was his idea of a unique monument triad, a monument landscape on the Danube near the old imperial city of Regensburg. At Ludwig's request, a visual connection from the top platform of the Walhalla to Regensburg Cathedral had to be guaranteed at all costs. In addition to the Bavarian State Exhibition, a visit to the nearby cathedral, Valhalla and Liberation Hall is a must! The Walhalla can be easily reached by excursion boats that leave from near the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte.

Built between 1830 and 1842, the Walhalla was a temple of fame for important historical figures who were "of the German tongue". Ludwig had been commissioning busts of selected men and women for this purpose since 1807. Ludwig visited Regensburg on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of Walhalla in October 1830. To celebrate this event, he was presented with the keys to the city. This scene can be seen on a target in the permanent exhibition of the House of Bavarian History, which can also be visited with a ticket for the state exhibition.

Ludwig commemorated the victorious battles against France with the Liberation Hall, whose 21-year construction period ended in 1863. In 1834-1839, he had the baroque interior of Regensburg Cathedral removed and replaced with Gothic-style elements. He also donated numerous stained glass windows, which are still fascinating today. And long after his retirement, Ludwig supported the extension of the two towers with considerable financial resources from 1858 onwards. Ludwig's close connection to Regensburg thus endured.
