The Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte and the National Museum in Prague paints an opulent picture of that era for the joint 2023-24 Bavarian-Czech State Exhibition.
The exhibition will be shown in the Danube Hall of the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte in Regensburg from May 10 to October 3, 2023 and at the National Museum in downtown Prague from December 8, 2023 to May 8, 2024.
It is a tale of crisis and reconstruction: It begins with the major tragedy of the Thirty Years’ War. Bavaria is one of the major parties, wins Bohemia for the Habsburg emperor and becomes an electorate. The imperial tribunal rages on Prague’s Old Town Square. Bohemia has to become Catholic again. Bavaria is a theater of war for decades and is among the losers in the end. Restoration is the chief concern after the disaster and finds form in the Baroque – in Bohemia and in Bavaria.
A shared cultural region emerges out of the devastation: Construction booms in both realms. The Baroque is celebrated. The Bavarian-Czech State Exhibition in Regensburg and Prague presents the diversity and the riches of a grandly passionate era, dark abysses and illusions, heaven and hell with over 150 exceptional original objects, primarily from the two regions.
