Traditional Symbols

The Bavarian Lion, the "Bavaria" and the blue-and-white heraldic lozenges all symbolise the state of Bavaria, and can be found on portals, fountains, statues, flags and banners everywhere. The lion dates back to the coat of arms of the Palatine Wittelsbachers, and the lozenges to the Counts of Bogen. The lion and Bavaria both form part of the colossal statue outside the Ruhmeshalle in Munich.

The Free State of Bavaria has adopted the symbols of the lion and Bavaria and retained them to the present day.
