Weiden
(Oberpfalz)

In 1928 a memorial was erected for the 458 fallen soldiers of Weiden who died in World War I. On a commemorative stone with the inscription:

DIE DANKBARE STADT WEIDEN
IHREN GEFALLENEN HELDENSÖHNEN 1914–18

(the grateful town of Weiden to its fallen heroes 1914-1918), all the names - among them the Jewish soldier Paul Klein s.A. are listed.

In 1954 there was an architectural competition for the redesigning of the monument for the fallen soldiers of the wars in 1914/18 1nd 1939/45. No names were listed on the new monument, but a chronicle with the names, ranks, date of birth and death of all the fallen soldiers was put together that was to be set into a container of bronce, in the base of the memorial.

In april 1955, the memorial with the dates of the two World Wars was set up in the grounds on Bürgermeister-Prechtl-Straße. Five volumes with the names of fallen soldiers were set into the monument. In 1983, these volumes were transfered into the municipal archives, because they were exposed to humidity in the container.
