Marktbreit
Kitzingen (Unterfranken)

In Marktbreit, there are two memorials, bearing witness of the willingness of Jewish-German soldiers to sacrifice their life for their country.

The public war memorial - a column in the middle of a fountain, encircled by a forged fence (with military symbols) - for the fallen and missing citizens of Marktbreit is situated to the left of Bahnhofstraße, on the corner of Schloßplatz/Pfarrgasse, infront of the church. The names of the Jewish victims of war are also commemorated here (in chronological order):

A further memorial, that had been put up by the now extinct Jewish congregation, is to be found on the wall of the former synagogue in Schustergasse (the empty space between no.12 and no.14).

It has, below a helmet, in Hebrew, the following inscription:

Dedicated in memory of the people from our community who went to the war of 1914-1918 and never returned

Below the text:

The heroes were killed in action!

(Samuel II. Kap. 1.Vers 25 u. 27)

you will find the bourgeois (and in Hebrew the Jewish) name and further dates of members of the community, who were killed in action:
