Harburg
Donau-Ries (Schwaben)

On the Jewish cemetery of Harburg, that is situated outside of the community, near the "Bochsberg", you will find a gravestone, that has an inscription entirely in Hebrew. The buried person is obviously a veteran from the war in 1813/14. The inscription has the following (translated) text:

Here lies a boy, the hon. Mendel, son of the hon. ISAAK MENDEL from HARBURG.
Bitter were the days of his youth
Diligent and straight in
his work everyday of his life
At the end of his days he was
one of the prayers
He died on the day of wednesday, 27. Elu 610 (small calender)
May his soul be bundled in the bounds of the (eternal) life.

The German date of death is the 4th of september 1850. That is the time of the Wars of Liberation.Mendel must have been a soldier in that war.
