Burgkunstadt
Lichtenfels (Oberfranken)
In Burkunstadt, the public war memorial for the fallen and missing soldiers of the two World Wars is to be found on the municipal cemetery. It consits of a large crucifixion, on the base of which you find the inscription:

Den Gefallenen gew. v. Schuhfabrikanten Hans Püls
Burgkunstadt 1923

(dedicated to the fallen soldiers by shoe-manufacturer Hans Püls, Burkunstadt 1923)

Behind the three figures there is a semi-circular wall, consisting of seven slabs. The central slab has the following inscription:

UNSEREN GEFALLENEN UND VERMISSTEN ZWEIER
WELTKRIEGE DIE DANKBARE STADT BURGKUNSTADT

(to our missing and fallen soldiers of the two World Wars - the greatful town of Burkunstadt)

Under the inscription: WELTKRIEG 1914 – 1918 on the two slabs in the left corner the names of the fallen soldiers of World War I are listed in chronological and alphabetical order. (The other two slabes are dedicated to the victims of the war of 1939-1945) On them the following Jewish soldiers are commemorated:

A further war memorial is to the right of the town-church. On the metal plaque you you will find the dedication:

Turnverein Burgkunstadt In treuem Gedenken
unseren tapferen Helden gefallen im Weltkriege 1914 – 18

(The gymnastics club in loyal memory of our brave heroes, who were killed in action in the war of 1914-1918)

Below that the members of the gymnastic club are commemorated, among them the Jewish soldier:

Und wer den Tod im heiligen Kampfe fand,
Ruht auch in Fremder Erde im Vaterland
