Bayreuth
(Oberfranken)

On the Jewish cemetery of Bayreuth, in the eastern part of the city, Nürnberger Straße 9, to the left of the Tahara-house (built in 1995), a new war memorial for their fallen soldiers has been put up by the Jewish congregation. It has the following inscription below a star of David:

DEM HEILIGEN ANDENKEN DER
1914 - 1918 GEFALLENEN SÖHNE ISRAELS

(in memory of the sons of Israel, who died in the war of 1914-1918)

This memorial stone is part of a complex of three parts for the dead of the Jewish congregation of Bayreuth, including those, who were killed during the nazi-regime because of their Jewishness.

The head of the Jewish congregation of Bayreuth, Josef Gothart thinks, that most probably these are the graves of German soldiers, or of foreign soldiers, who died in captivity.
