Ansbach
(Mittelfranken)
The public war memorial is to be found at the south-tower of the lutheran church of St.Johannis - no names are listed, probably because of the large number of deaths - only the following inscription can be seen:MCMXIV - MCMVIII IHREN GEFALLENEN SOEHNEN DIE DANKBARE VATERSTADT (MCMXIV - MCMVIII - To their sons, who died in action - the grateful hometown) .

In 1923, the commemorative book "1914/1918 Anbachs Gefallenen zum Gedächtnis" (1914/1918 - In memory of the fallen sodiers of Ansbach) was compiled, with the information given by the families. In it the following Jewish soldiers are mentioned:

Hermann Schloss für das Vaterland 5.Mai 1915

Max Fischer vermißt seit 17.Juni 1916

Fritz Hamburger, Offiziershospitant für das Vaterland 29. September 1918

On the Jewish cemetery further gravestones for or of Jewish-German soldiers can be found:one gravestone in Hebrew and German has the following inscription:

Hier ruht Herr Jakob Frank Soldat im 21 Infant. Rgt. geb. 15. Dez. 1887 gest. 27. Dez. 1915 im Reservelazarett in Fürth Ehre seinem Andenken

(This is the resting-place of Herr Jakob Frank soldier in the 21 inf.reg. born on the 15th of december 1887, died the 27th of december 1915, in the reserve military hospital in Fürth / we honour his memory)

ansbach-1.jpg (18662 Byte) On the base of the gravestone for Abraham Hamburger, s.A, "Hier ruht Herr Abraham Hamburger geb. 8. Juni 1860 in Colmberg gest 7. April 1916 dahier" (This is the resting-place for Abraham Hamburger, born on the 8th of june 1860 in Colmberg, died on the 7th of april in this place), you can decipher the additional inscription:

Ihm folgte sein Sohn

Fritz Hamburger

er starb für’s Vaterland

29. Sept. 1918

in Stenay=Frankreich

(His son Fritz Hamburger followed him / He died for his country on the 29th of september 1918 in Stenay, France)

On another gravestone, the rank of the buried - obviously he had been proud of it as a German patriot - is to be found:

Theodor Dietenhöfer Kaufmann Leutnant d.R.

27.Januar 1897 - 9. Dezemb. 1923

(Theodor Dietenhöfer, merchant, reserve second lieutenant, 27th of January 1897 - 9th of december 1923)
ansbach-2.jpg (25746 Byte) At the western border of the city of Ansbach, the memorial for the Ulahns is situated, donated by the officers of the 2nd Royal Bavarian Ulahns "König", that lists all the fallen soldiers of that regiment. On the plaque for the 4th squadron, the name of the fallen Jewish soldier Ul. B. Herz 11. 8. 14 can be found. It commemorates Ulahn B.Herz "der bei der für das Regiment verlustreichen Attacke von Lagarde am 11. August 1914 gefallen ist" (who died for his regiment in the attack of Lagarde on the 11th of august 1914, that involved many losses)

It is remarkable that the name lasted through the Third Reich, despite the fact that the plaque was renewed in 1938.
